Jack is proud to represent Iowa Senate District 19, which includes Ankeny, Alleman, and north Des Moines.
A lifelong Iowan, Jack grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State he was a three-year starter as wide receiver for the Iowa State Cyclones football team.
An entrepreneur at heart, Jack began his first small business immediately following graduation from ISU. He has grown that into several fitness businesses and recently the restaurant business. Both the values he was raised with and the experience of founding and growing a small business have shaped his political philosophy.
In 2012, Jack graduated from Drake University Law School and practices law at the Hagenow and Gustoff Law Firm in Des Moines. He specializes in estate planning and business law.
Senator Whitver believes the key to Iowa’s future is a 21st century economy which blends the technology, innovation, and efficiency of the present with the traditional values of hard work and sacrifice Iowans have always been known for.
Whitver was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2011. As a fierce believer in lower taxes and less government, he has spent the last seven years focused on budget issues and fighting for fiscal discipline. Jack has voted to reduce Iowa’s income tax, add a Balanced Budget Amendment to Iowa’s Constitution, and improve Iowa’s economy and job climate.
Through his tenure in the Iowa Senate, he has held leadership positions including Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee and Republican Whip. After the November 2016 Election, when Republicans gained control of the Iowa Senate, Jack was elected as the Iowa Senate President by his colleagues. IN March of 2018, Jack was elected as Senate Majority Leader.
During the historic 2017-2018 General Assembly, he helped to shape and drive the pro-growth agenda, among which: reduces taxes on hardworking Iowans, expands Iowa’s skilled workforce, adopted a balanced budget, protects the sanctity of life, protects Iowans’ personal freedoms, revitalizes rural Iowa, enforces uniform employment laws, empowers local schools, prevents the waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars, improves Iowa’s mental health system and improves Iowa’s water quality.
Although these reforms have taken Iowa to the #1 overall ranking in the US News Best States ranking, Jack will continue to move Iowa forward, to create a better future for our state by standing for a smaller, smarter government, and working to reduce the tax burden on Iowans.
He and his wife Rachel live in Ankeny, where they are proudly raising their three children, Ella, Elin, and Drew.
